Omni La Costa Resort Resort & Spa – Carlsbad California
Omni La Costa Resort and Spa, nestled in Carlsbad California’s coastal valleys, is one of our all-time favorites. Just 90 miles south of Los Angeles and 20 miles north of San Diego, the sprawling 400-acre gem is a great place to relax and get away from it all. The property is beautiful – exquisitely dressed in brightly colored and pristinely maintained landscaping. The rolling hills of the Carlsbad coastal valleys make the perfect, almost European backdrop to the Spanish Mission and Andalusian-style architecture.
The rustic luxury of 600-plus villas and suites feel inviting and comfortable. Having stayed in nearly every part of the property, each experience has been uniquely enjoyable. From the hill-top vacation villas, to the patio suites with golf course views, and the plaza rooms nestled around secluded swimming pools, our stays have always been memorable, each time calling us back again.
Making this trip special was the chance to get together with my long-time high-school friend, Jeff Feinberg along with his wife Lori and three kids. Having spent most of his life serving our country as a Navy Doctor, deployed in combat zones three times, Jeff will soon receive new orders taking him, once again, into harm’s way. His willingness to take on the awesome and never-ending responsibility of protecting our freedoms reminds me how fortunate we are to enjoy vacation and recreation activities like travel and golf – two such freedoms I try not to take for granted.
We wanted to spend our time with Jeff and Lori so we did not have the opportunity to hit the Lynx this trip, but there is much we can tell you about the two great 18 hole, par-72 championship courses. Plus, we had a chance to enjoy many other amenities offered at the La Costa – amenities that you will certainly want to check out on your first trip to this amazing property.
As a family golf-vacation destination, the La Costa is hard to beat. Don’t just take my word for it; some of the most coveted accolades and awards in the golf and travel industry have been bestowed on this amazing resort. I had a chance to catch up with the Omni La Costa’s Managing Director, Gary L. Sims to ask him about the resort’s success, history and amenities.
G&TL: Congratulations on being awarded Golf Magazine’s prestigious Gold Medal award for 2016, Golf Weeks top Courses, and Golf Advisor’s Best Family-Friendly Golf Resorts. What is Omni La Costa’s secret to success?
Gary: La Costa’s 50 years of golf history is undeniable. The greatest professional golfers of their day, including Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods have all played on our courses and helped position La Costa as the top golf destination in the nation. We continue that legacy by providing award-winning golf on both our Champions and Legends courses for players seeking an exciting game. Our success comes from the exceptional service our team extends and the golf programming for adults, families and children. I am proud that the recognition we receive comes as a result of our guests and members who golf here regularly. Our golf pros and instructors like AJ Avoli, named one of Golf Digest’s “Top 40 Young Instructors in America,” make La Costa the place to come for the perfect golf experience. The courses are in the best condition they have ever been, although that hasn’t helped my swing much.
G&TL: Does being a family-friendly golf destination give you an advantage over other resorts?
Gary: Absolutely! Omni La Costa is not only known as the perfect golf destination, but the resort is also the perfect family destination. With our PGA Junior Golf Camps for the kids, families can visit the resort and have a great time. While the kids are at golf camp, parents can hit the course by booking our Unlimited Golf package or the La Costa Experience package which includes golf AND spa credits. Water slides, Kidtopia Kids Camp, eight pools, 17 tennis courts and the luxurious Spa at La Costa, there’s a reason why families from all across the country plan their golf vacations at Omni La Costa.
G&TL: What has the feedback been like from members and guests after Dick Wilson’s contributions to the famed Champions Course?
Gary: The original 72-par, 7,200 yard golf course was designed by renowned architect Dick Wilson. It covered 215 acres and cost $1.5 million to build. By the time La Costa opened in 1965, it had been selected to host the nationally broadcasted CBS Golf Classic. In 1984 an additional nine holes were built, bringing the total to 36 and creating two unique courses–the North and the South, which are now known as Champions and Legends. Our members are very familiar with the historical influence our courses have had on the golf industry. Some were members back then and enjoy telling friends and family stories about the Hollywood “elite” who would spend time at the resort and on the courses. As the average age of our members gets younger we make adjustments to our service, course play and amenities that complement the “La Costa Lifestyle” offered 50 years ago and present day.
G&TL: What advice do you have for first time visitors to the Omni La Costa?
Gary: There is so much to see and do at Omni La Costa so while we want you to relax and have an amazing vacation, it’s important that you plan some of your experiences before you arrive. First, book your tee times. Tee times fill up fast especially during high demand weekends like over Spring Break and the summer months. If you’re a Select Guest member, your clubs fly free through Labor Day 2016 which makes it so easy to play our courses with your own clubs. Second, book your spa treatments, because like golf, The Spa at La Costa is a popular experience for our guests. Finally, don’t over schedule. Omni La Costa is known for its beautiful grounds, blooming flowers, quiet spaces and sparkling pools so be sure to take advantage of some down time.
G&TL: What’s new at the Omni La Costa?
Gary: Omni La Costa has gone through a transformation recently. Many guests tell us that the feeling they have when they’re here is different from when they’ve visited in the past, but they can’t quite put their finger on why that is. The resort is more stunning than ever, the courses are gorgeous, the service is impeccable and our guests are happy. Additionally, we just welcomed Bob’s Steak & Chop House to the resort. A traditional American prime steakhouse and the first in Southern California, Bob’s is known for prime steaks and a fantastic wine list. It’s a must visit when you’re here.
